HECUBA DEBUTED AT VOILA! FESTIVAL IN NOVEMBER 2025

VOILA! FESTIVAL POSTER 1(1).png

Arwa Omaren, Palestinian-Syrian actress, presents her one woman show “Hecuba:
Why Am I In Your Country?” where she combines her experience of playing Hecuba
the displaced Queen of Troy in Euripides’ great anti-war Greek Tragedy The Trojan
Women, with her own experiences of being a refugee from the Syrian war, after
growing up as a Palestinian refugee in Syria, from a family of refugees in Yarmouk
City - “the mouth of the volcano” – a city fuelled by drugs and anger. What does it
mean to be a double refugee? How does it feel to be told to “go back to your own
country” by a school mate when you don’t have one? Arwa tells her life journey and
what drove her to leave Yarmouk, and after being thrown back in to make the most
dangerous journey of all to the UK.

Written by, and adapted from Euripides, by Arwa Omaren, in collaboration with William Stirling.
