Refugee Gala: Edinburgh Festival Fringe 7th August 2020
Pleasance EICC Special Event

A modern take on Euripides’ Trojan Women featuring stories of displaced people

Directed by Victoria Beesley. Adapted by Mariem Omari with Alaa Saloum and Sanaa Al Froukh. Features original contributions from the ensemble cast.

We gathered for a unique refugee theatre gala during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which showcased a moving adaptation of Euripides enacted by Syrian refugees who had settled in Scotland. Polished over months of dedicated drama workshops, the play blended ancient tragedy with the performers' personal histories of displacement. The stage work provided a delicate, unfiltered look into the life of an asylum seeker. Presented in Arabic with English surtitles, the evening functioned as a meaningful link between those who fled war and their adoptive neighborhoods. Audiences witnessed a profound dramatic work that navigated the path of seeking asylum and the resilience needed to start over after profound loss. It stood as a significant tribute to the endurance of the human soul following the hardships of forced migration.
